World Community Services Summit on Sustainable Development opened in Cairo, Egypt

Tonight on Dec 3, 2004, Rotary's World Community Summit on Sustainable Development opened in Cairo, Egypt.

Some 400 representatives from all over the world have gathered together to discuss critical health matters such as HIV/AIDS, diseases of the eye, and reproductive health, as well as the ramifications on sustainable development of population growth and water resources. Literacy, microcredit, agriculture, child spacing, and job training are key success factors to face these challenges.

Panelists (from left to right): Bill Cadwallader, Solve Kernell, Dr. M.Helmy Wahdan, Virginia Ofosu-Amaah, Stan Tempelaars, Robert Zinser; missing: Salem Mashhour

The audit was adressed by
  • Mounir Sabet, Governor of hosting District 2450
  • Virginia Ofosu-Amaah, representative of UNFPA
  • Bill Cadwallader, Conference Chairman and Chairman of RI Community Services Committee
  • Robert Zinser, Chairman of RFPD

Conference Chairman Bill Cadwallader pointed out Rotary's success in fighting Poliomyelitis. This is nearly finished now, and Rotary needs to determine its way for the next 20 years.

Dr. Ahwad Tag El-DinKeynote speaker was Dr. Ahwad Tag El-Din, Minister of Health and Population of Egypt. He showed that Egypt has reached an excellent success adressing health and population issues. Average life expectancy rised, while child and birth mortality lowered. Egypt fighted successfully against malaria, diphteria, bilharzia and tuberculosis. Even the goals in providing water systems to every village have been reached.
But there is still a population issue. Although fertility rate decreased significantly, it is still too high to provide a sustainable reproduction. The Egyptian government therefore supports family planning and education programs, and appreciates the efforts of NGOs like Rotary.
