- 98 % of world population growth occurs in developing countries , many of them already struggling to provide food, jobs, eduaction, health care and basic services to their citizens.
- Nearly a billion people are illiterate.
- 840 Million people lack adequate access to food.1.5 billion people lack access to sanitation or safe drinking water. 160 million children are malnourished.
- 600 million people are homeless or lack adequate shelter.120 million people are actively looking for work.
- The deaths of a substantial proportion of the 35.000 children who die every day are attributed to their births being too closely spaced, usually less than two years after the borth of a sibling.
- Shortfalls in international family planning assistance are estimated to result in as many as 220 million unintended pregnancies, 104 million unintended births and 88 million additional abortions.
- 33 countries have a total fertility rate of six children or more per woman and a combined population of about 483 million, nearly the equivalent of the entire population of Latin America.
- 110 million children are unable to attend a school.
- A doubling of world grain harvest will be necessary to accomodate a world population of 9.4 billion people the most likely United Nations projection for world population in the year 2050.
- 97 % of deaths from infections and parasitic deseases - including tuberculosis, cholera, meningitis, and Ebola - occur in low-income countries, many of which have high fertility rates and soaring urbanization.
