Cairo -
Summary on Discussions (Dezember 2004)

"Rotary's Road to World Peace"

Ten years after the UN's remarkable International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), Rotary's World Community Service Summit took place in Cairo.
More than 400 delegates from 34 countries discussed population development, health and hunger issues, water ressources, literacy and micro enterprise projects. A report on Findings was prepared and will be presented to the R.I. Board and to The Rotary Foundation.
Twenty discussion workshops addressed topics as Hunger, Water, HIV/AIDS, Micro-enterprise, Literacy. Population Concerns was a topic woven through the entire agenda, emphasizing its importance as an underlying issue to most other areas of Rotary humanitarian work.
Read about the discussion workshops, based on the materials of the Findings Commission.

A1, B1,C1, D1: Population Concerns

Rotary’s scope should be on the middle of the road. Both population and child spacing issues should be addressed. This goes together with prevention of health care, especially to prevent obstetric fistula. A third pillar is the economic situation which is empowered by microcredits.
Rotary's strength is to work on grassroot levels, providing success by teaming up with local authorities and adopting local traditions. Working together with UN organizations like UNFPA. Big projects had been successful in Nigeria, Egypt, India, Turkey and Mexico.
The challenges remain the same: adress poverty, health concerns and literacy. Set up a system which is adopted locally on grass root level to be sustainable.
Rotary needs to be a strong partner in looking at the population issue. Population is the most critical point in environment and peace. So, provide sustainable projects – don’t finish with the Foundation report.

C5: Funding for WCS Projects

Rotary funds are limited. Many Rotarians do not know how to address potential funding partners. Contributors could be private foundations, international organizations, NGOs and governments. We should explain how Rotary works to win such contributors. The Rotary Foundation should favor projects that are being co-financed with non-Rotarian partners.

A2, B2: HIV AIDS

Reproduction and sexual responsibility are a fundamental human right. Rotary's plans could focus on HIV AIDS awareness programs including methods of prevention and a focus on the young, family planning/child spacing oriented educational programs, literacy programs, micro-credit opportunities for women, treatment programs for those with HIV AIDS, testing programs, and counseling.

A3, B4: Micro Enterprise

The vision is a Micro Enterprise Program that is culturally sensitive and effective in the empowerment of women. Rotary should provide information about ME programs, including a step by step explanation, how to form and to implement such a program locally. This would include identifying partners (nationally and internationally) with whom to work.

A4: Water and Sanitation

Clean water is a human right, and sustainable projects in water include sanitation. The challenges of addressing the issues of Water and Sanitation are more than what Rotary International can do alone. Rotary should initiate a network of similarly interested organizations as a means of facilitating a cooperative effort.

A5, B3: Hunger & Agricultural Productivity

Providing the tools to produce food for oneself is the recommended approach for hunger. Agricultural methods need to be culturally sensitive and appropriate to be effective. Rotary Volunteers at the local community level can educate people about the agricultural techniques appropriate to their environment and train them on how to use such techniques.

B5: Family of Rotary

Rotary’s Vision for the Family of Rotary focuses on youth and women. Rotary should develop programs that are culturally and country sector specific in assisting youth and women in their development and independence. Local Rotaract Clubs and Inner Wheel Clubs should implement such programs, and formation of Rotaract and Interact Clubs should be encouraged.

C2: Literacy

Rotary’s Vision is a literate world, with a focus on women. Literacy programs should be part other programs such as HIV AIDS and Micro Enterprise Programs.

C3: Rotary Volunteers

Rotary Volunteers need a better and more effective support, such as, housing, immigration, obtaining visas, shipping personal belongings. A greater awareness among Rotarians about the Rotary Volunteer Program should be created. An increased budget would highlight the greater effectiveness of Rotary Volunteers and the longer lasting results they produce.

C4: UN & Other Governments

A viable working relationship with the UN is required in addressing Rotary’s multiplicity of humanitarian programs. This includes coordinating and accessing resources and experience of Rotary’s Headquarters in working with such organizations and their network of people.
D2: Role of Media

Telling the Rotary Stories needs to maximize the use of media technology on all levels. Rotary have to make better use of their magazines and of local media. Reports on projects and how they are done should be elicited and invited. Rotarians should be told on what they can do to provide stories that Rotary may use for international and national media.

D3: Partners in International Development

Rotary’s outreach in International Development can drastically expanded when cooperating with partners. Rotary Fellowships help to identify partners for Rotarians with which to work on projects. Also, fellowships often have experts amongst their members or friends of them, who are experienced in the skills required for a project.
D4: Avoidable Blindness

Prevention is the key issue to create vision for the world. Topics are cataracts, trachoma, river blindness, childhood diseases. Partnering with drug producers and international organizations is a key factor for success.

D5: Malaria

Primary victims of which are children under five years of age and pregnant women. Control and ultimate elimination of Malaria is one of Rotary's visions. WHO, World Bank, US AID and country specific Ministries of Health are the partners of choice. Programs for Malaria include immunizations for measles, polio, etc as well as providing Vitamin A and antibiotics to prevent diseases.
